thursday to monday

a big big weekend. adamson style. thursday to monday. some work, some play.
thursday. been married 9 years. if knew 9 years ago i could have a cool day like this one, i wouldn't have been so nervous on my wedding day. i gave elizabeth a small digital video camera for a present.
sunset hill park, valpo. ran in a 5k race through the park while adam roney (along with graham and mike p. played a show at the finish line) i placed 55th out of 144, it was the best place of my adult career. but the time was slow. (some of each was caught on video.) then we and them, along with sharon, jill, sarah, and a mowhawked-guy named tony went to greeks pizzeria. this seemed appropriate because, when we were 'a courtin', elizabeth and i used to go to greeks pizza in marion quite often to get away from campus. after we left, we ran in to todd, who got a call from zika, then within a short while, we were all hanging out at a chinese-style pavilion in ogden gardens as twilight came down and mosquitos came up with the lightning bugs.
also learned that our loan for the house on cyrus street was approved. i felt ten pounds lighter. two months of not getting a call, wondering every time i looked at the phone, was finally over! we'll be officially out of the 720 on the 7th.
saturday. bottle rocket blue landed again. at a big graduation party at the national guard armory in valpo. we played for two hours. no small feat considering we haven't practiced since march 13 or played a show since Jan. 4. anyway we sounded alright. the songs seems to demand some sort of existence, so we're got going to call it quits completely. what the future will look like, who knows? but it's worth a shot. baby, we get one more shot.
it rained that night. it rained cats and dogs. i slept lightly. dreamt weirdly.
sunday morning, it was hot. more thunderstorms. hail. despite the contrary weather, i packed a back pack for the beach. i drove by myself in the little blue honda's last great adventure. (more in that in a minute) up to warren dunes to meet with jake miller and some of the goshen music diaspora. when i reached bridgman, michigan, the sun was out. it was 83 degrees and i had no idea how to find them at the beach. i parked and still in my jeans, i wandered south, along the water. when i reached the end and did not find them, i turned around and went north. almost making it up to opposite end. i started to compose an epic poem in my head about my search. i looked at thousands of faces, no one was who i was seeking. there were many ages and languages. everyone seemed content in his or her element, with the exception of one elderly lady. she crouched under a golf umbrella, very close to her head. you almost couldn't see her. as i approached the north end of the beach. i saw two tanned college age kids walking towards me. i looked again. it was jake and rachel. they hadn't spotted me yet, so i decided to walk between them if they remained oblivious. i got within arms length when they figured out the guy with the dark sunglasses was me. it was a happy reunion. we walked back to their towels and caught up. i told jake about my poem and recited what i remembered. jake said he was thinking the same thing, like how the beach was what he wanted heaven to be. every type of person was there. and they were all on vacation. not in a hurry, just being and content in a gorgeous surrounding. rachel said that jake and i were the same person. i said, well, we're very close. jake said, it's more like we belong in movie together. he and rachel had a friendly wager about what my swim trunks looked like. jake guessed solid blue. rachel guessed sold red. she was right. i brought my solid red trunks. but i reassured jake that my other 4 pairs were all solid blue.
we swam in the cold waters and met up with the rest of that gang. jake and i took a walk in to the woods and discussed music and life. after that, we met up with rachel and a fellow named case. he plays music with jake from time to time. we ate dinner in the woods with their other friends, then the four of us went back to the beach to watch the sunset. we got a little more than we bargained for, however. with the sun still fairly high in the sky, we decided to explore some of the dunes. we ended up doing some wicked dune jumping for a while. after we wore ourselves out, we layed on the sand and watched a storm roll in from over the waters. the sky had been breath taking all afternoon. when the winds began to really pick up, we strolled slowly back to the parking lot while all the other beach goers scurried about in a panic. it was peaceful.
leaving the park, i caught up with my brother jon on the phone. then the four of us went to family restaurant in the town. we had coffee and pie. it felt good after being cold in the storm. we talked about dreams a lot that day. our waitress was very chill. i am very glad i went.
on the ride home, i saw two rain bows. i talked to barry for a while. i also talked to my sister sarah.
oddly enough, i beat elizabeth home. i took a shower and started to play guitar (in my towel) it felt great to let the music out. when she came back, we went to bed and i poured some wine and after talking for a while, it was getting near midnight. so i started playing again. she fell asleep, but i kept playing and sipping. it was 1:30 when i woke up with a guitar on my chest and drool on my pillow.
i got up for work at 5:15. i was sleepy all day. sleepy too on the way home. i had a hard time staying awake. i fought to stay awake behind the wheel. i was nearning the corner of 2 and 231 when the next thing i knew, i was going off the road into a soy bean field. but first i went through a construction sign and a bush. i had been listening to rich mullin's "liturgy, legacy, and a ragamuffin band." when the dust settled, it was in some part of the song "hold me jesus." i got out of the car and surveyed the damage, a little dazed, but unscathed. the car had a blow-out tire, a bent up the hood, and knocked-off front bumper. i was able to drive it to road side where a state trooper helped me get a tow truck.
it didn't occur to me late that i could have died. if i hadn't swerved off the road where i did, i would have slammed into a busy intersection of waiting cars. i was extremely tired when the ordeal was over and the adrenaline ebbed. i fell asleep. when i woke up, i thought about rich mullins. he died in a car crash in 1996. could be like a patron saint now? i mean, was it divine intervention that pushed me off the road right where it needed to happen. no one was hurt, just the car.
as much as i fear dissapointing mike p. about selling his car, a guy stopped by here tonight and offered to buy it from me for parts. i accepted. after i move to valpo, i won't need a work car unless i get another job out of town, so, i'll be alright in that regard.
tall oaks school offered e. the teaching job. she has a few days to decide if she'll take it.
i'm off to take a bike ride and procrastinate some homework via hanging out at the brother's gross loft for a while tonight. ciao.
